CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 24, 2013) - Exalt Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of next-generation packet microwave backhaul systems, today announced Adaptive Latency Control, a breakthrough approach to slashing latency and minimizing network noise in financial trading networks supporting high frequency trading (HFT). This patent-pending Exalt architecture enables microwave network planners to optimize financial trading networks for ultra-low latency by defining Exalt radio configurations on-the-fly with superior ease of deployment, on-board diagnostics, and economics.
"In the early stages of the market, network operators tested traditional microwave as an alternative to fiber for financial trading, and they proved its superiority for high speed transmission," said Amir Zoufonoun, CEO of Exalt. "Now they are looking for a better microwave designed specifically to achieve ultra-low latency. This is next generation HFT microwave, and Exalt is delivering it today with advances in technology such as our unique Adaptive Latency Control." (For more specific information on Exalt and HFT, refer to related press release at www.exaltcom.com/HFT-Evolution.aspx.)
While radios from traditional microwave vendors must be pre-configured as radios or repeaters, Exalt radios can be configured on-the-fly as network signal regenerators, network recoding systems, or endpoints. Regenerators pass on the microwave signal with the lowest possible latency, while recoding systems apply forward error correction (FEC) to the signal to eliminate noise that is introduced when the signal is simply regenerated. Endpoints down-convert the microwave signal and apply FEC for the Ethernet connection to the HFT network at each end of the microwave link. All of these modes are remotely selectable under software control, so network engineers can deploy the same Exalt system on each link and then, from a network operations center, optimize radio personalities to deliver the lowest latency with lowest noise over the end-to-end network.
These multiple radio personalities work with Exalt's built-in diagnostic stress testing mechanisms to provide a clear view of latency and noise at each link in the overall network. Using Exalt system diagnostics, network operators can view the number of packet errors at each link in the network and then adjust Exalt microwave radio personalities to optimize network performance and reliability. Network statistics are available minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, or day-by-day.
The field-proven Adaptive Latency Control architecture has been delivering high performance in production HFT networks for over a year. The architecture is described in Exalt's paper, "Exalt Microwave: Achieving the Ultimate Speed in Financial Trading Networks for HFT," available on request at www.exaltcom.com/HFT.aspx.
In addition to Adaptive Latency Control, Exalt offers other significant advantages:
Easy Maintenance and Sparing - It is expensive to maintain a spare of each type of radio in the network. Exalt's field replaceable diplexer design means that providers need only stock one system as a spare for the network with low cost diplexers that define radio sub-bands thereby reducing sparing and maintenance costs.
Multitude of Spectrum Choices - It is not always possible to obtain a license for a specific frequency, so Exalt supports a multitude of licensed and license-exempt frequency bands. Designers can choose from multiple options for each link in the network. And because, in rare cases, operators may need high speed connectivity faster than a license can be obtained, Exalt offers a its all-indoor system supporting both the 5 and 6 GHz frequency bands. Once a license is granted, the network operator can turn this system from unlicensed to licensed without changing out any equipment.
Environmental Options - Different microwave sites call for different system configurations. Exalt offers a complete line of all-indoor, all-outdoor, and split-mount system configurations so network engineers can choose exactly the system they need at every site.
Upgradeability - Most microwave systems require forklift upgrades to take advantage of new developments in microwave technology, but Exalt's platform approach to microwave design enables systems to be upgraded through software license keys -- the hardware never needs to be replaced.
