James Beard Public Market Hires Fundraiser Lucy Buchanan

Expert Consultant to Promote Further Advancement of Portland's Future Daily, Year-Round, Indoor-Outdoor Marketplace

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwired - Jun 27, 2013) - The James Beard Public Market, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and public-private partnership, has hired Lucy Buchanan to lead its fundraising efforts. Buchanan will serve as consultant and provide execution and oversight for the $25 million capital campaign. Buchanan lives in San Francisco, Calif. and will travel regularly to Portland as part of her role.

Named in honor of famous chef James Beard, who was also a Portland native, the future market will be located at the west end of the Morrison Bridge in downtown Portland.

"Lucy is a fundraising veteran bringing years of experience -- many in Portland -- to the market, and we're thrilled to have her join us," said Ron Paul, executive director for the James Beard Public Market. "Recruiting Lucy marks a major step toward breaking ground on the James Beard Public Market."

Lucy Buchanan
Buchanan brings more than 27 years of fundraising experience to her position, with core expertise in advancement strategies, fundraising, marketing, communications, events and external relations for nonprofit organizations and institutions.

Since 2006, Buchanan has been the principal consultant for LMB Consulting, based in San Francisco. There, she has consulted for clients such as the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History, Monterey Museum of Art, and Boalt Law School at the University of California, Berkeley, among others.

Prior to taking on her current role, Buchanan worked for more than 12 years as the senior vice president for institutional advancement and development at the Portland Art Museum in Portland. She also raised half of the annual operating budget each year, with special emphasis on securing major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations to support exhibitions, special events, art acquisitions, education and community programs. She built the museum's corporate program, which grew from $300,000 to $1.5 million in annual donations.

Previously, she was director of development for The Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tenn., and prior to that senior account manager for Customer Development Corporation in Peoria, Ill.

Buchanan graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.

About the James Beard Public Market
Set to open in the coming years, the James Beard Public Market will be a daily, year-round, indoor-outdoor marketplace showcasing the state of Oregon's bounty while promoting community health, rural and urban economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and tourism. Throughout the last several years, the James Beard Public Market has worked to establish Portland, Ore., as the only city in the country with the rights to name a market after the city's most famous chef, James Beard. Often thought of as the father of American-style gourmet cooking, Beard was a Portland native. An early champion of local products and markets, Beard was a true food pioneer and his legacy includes the James Beard Awards -- the "Oscars of the food world" and the most coveted honor in the culinary community. The James Beard Public Market is a project of the Historic Portland Public Market Foundation, which grew out of a citizen task force convened in 2000. Portlanders from many walks of life met almost monthly for more than two years to create a vision for a public market in Portland. To learn more, visit http://www.jamesbeardpublicmarket.com.
