San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeon to Deliver Lecture on Ethnic Rhinoplasty at UCSD

Dr. John Hilinski Will Be Lecturing on Ethnic Rhinoplasty at the University of California-San Diego Medical Center; The Facial Plastic Surgeon Says His Techniques Are Designed to Address Individual Patient Concerns, While Maintaining Ethnic Consistency Among Facial Features

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 13, 2013) - On August 14, 2013, Dr. John M. Hilinski, a San Diego facial plastic surgeon, will present a lecture called "Updates in My Ethnic Rhinoplasty Practice," at the UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla as part of the UCSD Division of Plastic Surgery lecture series. The faculty of UCSD invited Dr. Hilinski to speak to other plastic surgeons and medical professionals in the community about techniques rhinoplasty surgeons can use and goals to keep in mind while working with nose surgery patients of various ethnicities.

According to Dr. Hilinski, there are a variety of reasons patients have when considering rhinoplasty surgery. Some express dissatisfaction with the shape or proportions of their nose, while others have functional problems like a deviated septum. Dr. Hilinski says rhinoplasty performed for African American patients, for example, requires a surgeon with a thorough understanding of ethnic nasal features and dedicated experience performing ethnic rhinoplasty. "African American rhinoplasty necessitates a true appreciation of the African American nose so that the final result will look natural on the face." Dr. Hilinski says his approach to rhinoplasty for African American patients, those of Asian heritage, and other ethnic groups strives to maintain ethnic features, rather than give every patient a nose with Caucasian-like features. According to Dr. Hilinski's online rhinoplasty guide, the surgeon should always try "to create a look that is ethnically consistent."

Dr. Hilinski says, ultimately, nose surgery is a complex operation that requires a great deal of experience before a surgeon can attain consistently great results. He says participating in continuing education and delivering lectures such as the one he will soon give at the UCSD Medical Center affords him an opportunity not only to share his experience, but also to stop and reflect on his own practice and techniques. "I think it is important that, as a regional specialist in complex rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, I provide some additional insight to community surgeons performing this type of procedure. [Also], by looking critically at my own results, I can only become better. I hope to pass on some helpful knowledge to my colleagues."
