Peter Gilgan, Founder of Mattamy Homes, Makes His Mark on Bay Street

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 26, 2013) - Canada's largest builder of new homes, Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes and philanthropist, has helped build the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning (Gilgan Centre) with his $40 million transformational gift. This is the single largest gift ever made to a children's hospital in Canada, supporting the largest capital campaign in the history of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

Mr. Gilgan will visit the site at the corner of Bay and Elm streets on Monday, August 26 to witness his name being installed on the Bay Street side of the building. The 39 letters, each approximately one metre tall (more than three feet), will be installed at the height of the east side of the 21-storey building. Installation begins on Monday morning and is expected to be completed by Friday.

The Gilgan Centre is believed to be the largest child health research tower in the world. A grand opening celebration is planned for September 17, 2013.

The Gilgan Centre will soon be home to 2,000 SickKids scientists, trainees and child health research and learning staff who are currently spread across six buildings. Located at the intersection of the Discovery District and the Financial District, the new 750,000 square foot, 21-storey building will house state-of-the-art laboratories and learning facilities. This beautiful new structure, designed by Diamond Schmitt, is a beacon and solidifies SickKids as a world leader in child health research and learning.
