Doing Workplace Charging the Best Way -- Lessons Learned

PASADENA, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 16, 2013) - In support of DRIVE THE DREAM, Governor Brown's event with corporate leaders today to support electric vehicles (EVs), CALSTART has published a "best practices" document that provides information on the best and most cost effective ways to install and use EV chargers at the workplace.

Based on input from a wide array of employers who have implemented EV charging programs, the document is a valuable resource and tool, and builds upon lessons learned. Employers can use this document to avoid costly mistakes, and have greater success in installing, and implementing effective programs.

"Though we are just in the early stages of the EV industry, several employers have already seen the benefit and opportunity of installing chargers at the workplace. 'CALSTART's Best Practices for Workplace Charging' is based on many conversations about what has worked and what hasn't for employers so far. It is a resource that can be used by employers to implement workplace charging programs in a most time and cost-effective way," said CALSTART President and CEO John Boesel.

Among the key workplace charging implementation questions addressed in the document are:

• How can chargers be installed at the lowest cost?
• What is the right number of chargers to install?
• Is this treated as an employee benefit?

For the past 18 months -- with funding support from Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the California Plug-in Electric Vehicle Collaborative -- CALSTART has been hosting webinars, in-person events, and supporting a wide variety of employers who are pursuing workplace charging programs. This document is based on interactions and meetings with close to a 100 different employers.

CALSTART's headquarters in Pasadena has an 84kw solar system that provides power to five different chargers and helps provide emission free energy to three electric vehicles driven by CALSTART employees on a daily basis.
