Phoenix Plastic Surgeon Clarifies Common Breast Reduction Myths

Dr. Steven Turkeltaub Addresses Breast Reduction Fears Regarding Pain, Sagging, Loss of Nipple Sensation, Ability to Breastfeed, and Insurance Coverage

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - Sep 24, 2013) - Dr. Steven Turkeltaub has over 25 years of experience helping women who struggle with breasts that are disproportionately large for their figure. At the Arizona Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, he states that the satisfaction rate in women who have had breast reduction surgery is extremely high, even exceeding that for women who have had a breast augmentation. In fact, he says it is extremely rare for a woman to regret her decision to undergo breast reduction surgery. Prior to their surgery, however, many patients are apprehensive about their upcoming procedure due to a number of myths that they have heard or read about and misconceptions that they have despite professional information that has been provided them.

In his recent blog post titled "Top 5 Breast Reduction Myths," Dr. Turkeltaub helps patients clarify the real facts about the procedure while debunking common misunderstandings. For example, he notes that many prospective breast reduction patients are hesitant to proceed with surgery due to their fear of a painful recovery. He states that recovery from breast reduction surgery typically is far easier and associated with less pain than that experienced following a breast augmentation. The majority of patients who do take pain medication after the procedure typically take low doses for a short duration of time.

The blog also addresses the fear women have of sagging breasts immediately after breast reduction surgery. According to Dr. Turkeltaub, while the effects of gravity and the eventual loss of elasticity in the breasts are natural and inevitable, there are steps women can take to slow the process. He states: "If a woman maintains her weight and wears a supportive bra, the results of a breast reduction can last longer."

In response to the common fears of losing nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed, Dr. Turkeltaub says that in both cases, the loss is conditional. "A vast majority of patients, in my experience, retain most if not all of their nipple sensation following breast reduction surgery," says Dr. Turkeltaub. While factors such as the amount of breast tissue being removed impact the capability to breastfeed, he notes, "I am aware of several patients of mine who had children subsequent to their breast reduction and who were able to breastfeed."

Lastly, Dr. Turkeltaub addresses patient concerns about insurance coverage for breast reduction surgery. Though many insurance plans do cover the procedure, the criteria used to determine a patient's eligibility vary from provider to provider. "Conditions for coverage may relate to a patient's weight versus the amount of breast tissue that is expected to be removed, BMI, cup size, and the presence, severity and number of symptoms related to the enlarged breasts including neck, back, and shoulder pain," says Dr. Turkeltaub. He goes on to highlight that in the event an insurance plan will not cover the procedure, his practice will work to find affordable financing solutions for his breast reduction patients.
