CEDAR FALLS, IA--(Marketwired - Nov 18, 2013) - With the advent of continually advancing technology in dental health care, Cedar Falls dentist Thomas J. Strub, DDS says staying up-to-date on the latest materials and techniques is not only required as a practicing dentist, but is also essential to providing exceptional care for patients. Dr. Strub upholds continuing education as a necessary tool not only for himself and his staff, but for his dedication to providing excellent, lifelong dental health for his patients. This year, Dr. Strub attended both the Star of the North and the Iowa Dental Association Annual Session.
"It really keeps us abreast with any of the changes occurring in dentistry -- not only myself -- but to all of the staff members," said Dr. Strub. "[At the Star of the North conference], all the staff members went to three or four different programs. It's one way we can listen to all the national and international big-name speakers that are experts in our field."
Held in Saint Paul, MN, by the Minnesota Dental Association at the end of every April, the Star of the North is a leading state dental meeting for the upper midwest region of the U.S., with yearly attendances of more than 8,500 dental professionals. In a recent blog post, titled, "Dr. Thomas J. Strub Acquires Latest Expertise and Application for Tooth-Colored Fillings," Dr. Strub explains how one seminar, "Everyday Aesthetics for the Everyday Dentist," presented the latest techniques for tooth-colored fillings to make them as natural-looking and undetectable as possible.
"The biggest thing we pulled away with was how you take different shades of tooth-colored filling material, and use three, four, or five different shades in a layering effect to bring out the color, translucency, and opaqueness of the tooth to exactly match the adjacent teeth so that they're virtually invisible," says Dr. Strub. "You need to know about the depth of color, and the different hues and chroma of color to make a tooth outstanding. You really almost need to be an artist as you layer the different composites, or tooth-colored filling materials."
Following the Star of the North conference, Dr. Strub attended the Iowa Dental Association's 151st Annual Session. Although not as large in scale, Dr. Strub says that the meeting was an excellent way to hear about all the different dental materials and technologies that are coming out. As mentioned in his blog post, "Dr. Thomas Strub Learns the Best and Newest in Dentistry of 2013," one key presenter at the meeting was Gordon Christensen, DDS, MSD, PhD, ScD. As one of the biggest names in dentistry, Dr. Strub says Dr. Christensen's seminar provided an overview for the best products available in numerous general and cosmetic dentistry areas, including:
- Porcelain Veneers
- Dental impression materials
- Bonding agents
- Tooth-colored filling materials
- Sealant procedures for young children
- Mini dental implants as a cost-effective option for patients on a lower budget
- Materials for porcelain crowns
By listening to leading clinicians and management personnel, Dr. Strub says that he and his staff are able to remain on top of the latest knowledge in the dental field and provide patients with the best-possible procedures. For example, during Dr. Christensen's seminar, Dr. Strub says that Christensen explained the most effective, long-lasting dental sealant procedures for children that would significantly decrease the amount of decay in the teeth. Although Dr. Strub's office has offered this methodology for the past 15 years, it was apparent that not all offices perform dental sealants in the most up-to-date, recommended way. "It's so important to [attend meetings] because one can't keep up just sitting in his office trying to find out that information," says Dr. Strub. "You really have to do a lot of research, a lot of reading, or go to courses like this that really give you that straight story on what works and what doesn't work."
