PLACENTIA, Calif., Dec. 17, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Placentia PONY Baseball will be offering a new Champion's League dedicated to helping children with special needs and developmental disabilities to participate in the game of baseball, with Opening Day featuring the first game on February 22, 2014, at Champions Park in Placentia at 11:00am.
The Champion's League is intended to create a safe and fun baseball experience for children with special needs, ages 4 and up, for a 12-week season at a cost of $25 per player thanks to the local community including Placentia PONY, DMA Insurance and Fullerton Cares. In support of the new Champion's League, 120 golfers are anticipated at the "Placentia PONY Baseball Inaugural" golf tournament at the Black Gold Golf Club on January 31, to assist in funding the new Champion's League, with registration starting at 10:15am, shotgun start at 12pm, a helicopter ball drop at 5:15pm and Dinner at 5:30pm. Supporting the league is Fullerton Cares, a coalition designed to give back to the local autism community. Says Fullerton Cares Founder, Larry Houser, of Fullerton, "The league will help bridge acceptance in the community and provide inclusion for those affected by autism with this groundbreaking special needs baseball program."
Inspired by his child's participation in PONY Baseball, father Tim Wetzel, of Placentia, helped to spearhead this initiative along with parent Dito Armento who helps raise the funds and awareness necessary. Together Wetzel and Armento hope to make baseball inclusive of all people of all abilities in Placentia California. Says Wetzel,"We are excited to grow our league in this exciting new direction and would like to invite all those interested in volunteering or playing in our new Champion's League."
