What Can I Expect From a Mommy Makeover? Connecticut Plastic Surgeon Explains

Dr. Fredric Newman Talks About the Mommy Makeover Procedure, How You Can Get Rid of That Post-Pregnancy Stomach Bulge, and Factors to Consider When Deciding the Best Time to Have the Treatment

DARIEN, CT--(Marketwired - Jan 2, 2014) - Many women search for ways to get their bodies back into shape after pregnancy and raising children. When even the strictest diet and exercise routines do not produce satisfactory results, some women opt for what's called a Mommy Makeover procedure -- a combination of plastic surgery treatments designed to restore their pre-pregnancy figure. An average mommy makeover at Dr. Fredric Newman's Connecticut plastic surgery practice combines a breast augmentation and/or breast lift with tummy tuck surgery to rejuvenate a woman's body after pregnancy. Dr. Newman says he ultimately bases his surgical approach on a foundation of strong doctor-patient communication. For mommy makeover patients, thorough pre-operative consultations allow Dr. Newman to custom-tailor the procedure to match the unique needs and body type of the individual.

According to Dr. Newman, this type of communication is essential to optimizing surgical results. In a recent blog post titled "How To Eliminate That Post-Pregnancy Bulge," he explains: "In my years of experience, the key to a successful mommy makeover has been spending the right amount of time assessing each patient's aspirations, hopes, desires, and expectations." Dr. Newman goes on to say that one of the primary concerns mommy makeover patients express during a consultation is their mid-section and sheds light on why some women cannot shed that extra weight and excess skin no matter how hard they try. "For women who have separated abdominal muscles as a consequence of childbirth (diastasis rectus), no amount of dieting or exercise will be able to reduce that bulge," says Dr. Newman. A mommy makeover, however, can address the abdominal area with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) in order to produce a "flatter," more toned-looking stomach.

In a follow-up blog post titled "Mommy Makeovers: How Long Should I Wait?," Dr. Newman cautions new mothers on the disadvantages of having a mommy makeover procedure performed too soon after childbirth. "One of our main concerns with a woman who is only a year or two out from her last pregnancy is that she has a one-year-old or two-year-old child at home," says Dr. Newman. "These women are not necessarily the best candidates for surgery because they will not be able to pick up their children in the weeks following the procedure." The Connecticut plastic surgeon also notes that while most of his patients will be walking around the day after surgery, they should expect to limit their normal activities for about four weeks -- another reason new mothers may want to wait awhile before having the procedure.

Ultimately, Dr. Newman says a mommy makeover can be very beneficial toward renewing a patient's post-pregnancy body and helping them feel great about their appearance. He notes that a good deal of discussion with a board-certified plastic surgeon and knowing when the time is right for treatment can often lead to the best possible results and a beautiful outcome.
