STAMFORD, CT--(Marketwired - Jan 8, 2014) - According to Dr. Edward Shukovsky, a dentist in Stamford, the restorative dentistry materials and techniques available in the 90s differ greatly from what is available now. He explains that he recently had a long-time patient return to him for a revision to the full mouth reconstruction that he performed approximately 20 years ago. Dr. Shukovsky notes that although the materials he originally used were still holding up and did not require replacement, the patient requested the revision for aesthetic purposes. In the original reconstruction, Dr. Shukovsky explains he used natural shades for the tooth coloring, but to keep up with the style of more modern restorations, his patient was seeking a whiter appearance to his smile. Dr. Shukovsky adds that due to the advancements in dentistry, he was able to achieve the patient's goal much more effectively, as well.
To complete the updated look, Dr. Shukovsky worked closely with Utah Valley Dental Lab. He says they created a wax-up for the patient and took photographs, so the patient could better understand what to expect, as well as request any changes or adjustments before the final restorations were produced. Once the smile had been designed, Dr. Shukovsky says he provided the patient with a set of temporary crowns and veneers to wear while the permanent ones were fabricated at the lab. After three weeks, Dr. Shukovsky says he had the patient return to have the permanent dental crowns and porcelain veneers cemented and bonded. He adds that the patient's new restorations were made out of a durable and lifelike material called lithium disilicate.
The Stamford dentist says he considers his work to be all about the patient, noting, "I feel like it's a privilege to treat patients, and it's exciting to see what we can do today that we couldn't do 10-20 years ago." He believes patients put a lot of trust into their dentist, so regardless of how involved the treatment is -- from something small, such as a filling to something more involved, like a full mouth rehabilitation -- he says he is thrilled to be able to provide his patients with the smile they desire.
