Event organizers were delighted the snowfall gave the annual Zehnder's Snowfest a head start for the January 22-27, 2014 event. This popular family festival brings the top snow and ice sculpting teams from the US and around the world to the Bavarian-themed village of Frankenmuth, just 90 miles north of Detroit. Let the Snow Show Begin
"We have to admit we were not complaining too much when all the snow hit in early January," said Zehnder's Chairman/CEO Al Zehnder. "The real snow is always great for our event instead of using snow machines. With more than 150,000 festival guests expected, we are ready to give them a great snow and ice show that has become a Pure Michigan tradition."
Every day is filled with eye-popping wintry creativity including a Michigan Snow Sculpting Competition, the 100-block ice carving exhibition with Greg Butauski, the award-winning certified master sculptor, and the US National Collegiate Ice Carving Competition. The event kicks off on Wednesday, January 22, and also features the Children's Snow Sculpting event located at Frankenmuth Riverplace on Main Street. The High School Snow Sculpting Competition begins on Thursday, January 23 also at Frankenmuth Riverplace.
The Snowfest gallery of snow and ice works can be seen throughout the festival on Main Street and areas adjacent to Zehnder's Restaurant, Frankenmuth Riverplace and Edwin L. Zehnder Park.
Visitors can take off the chill every day in the warming tent with refreshments and exhibits; the tent also will offer live music, dancing, karaoke and more. Kids can get in on the fun at the free petting zoo and kid's play area; Putt Putt Ice Golf and pony rides, each available at a cost $2 per person
Opening day offers the Michigan's Favorite Apple Pie Recipe Contest with pies, breads, muffins, cobblers/crisps, and miscellaneous apple dishes in the warming tent. This year the grand prize winner will receive round trip airfare and entry in the World Food Championships in Las Vegas, November 2014. Foodies can return on Monday, January 27, for the annual Chef's Hot Food Competition; sponsored by American Culinary Federation Flint/Saginaw Valley Chapter, proceeds support the Saginaw Eastside Soup Kitchen After School Dinner Program.
