Photo Release -- Latest National Geographic Film Features Images From Hillsboro-based FEI

Film With Local Involvement is Now Showing at Recently-Renovated Empirical Theater at OMSI

HILLSBORO, Ore., Jan. 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FEI (Nasdaq:FEIC) is pleased to announce its participation in the latest IMAX film, "Mysteries of the Unseen World," by National Geographic. Now showing at the recently-renovated Empirical Theater at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the big-screen movie features things that are too fast, too slow or too small to be seen with the naked eye. As a leader in electron microscopy, FEI was the exclusive partner in the development of the "too small" portion of the film.

The world's smallest things are made visible in the movie through FEI's Versa 3D™ DualBeam™ electron microscope. Electron microscopes are thousands of times more powerful than the average light microscope. The movie features images of everyday things, ranging in size from fleas, to blood cells, to atoms and molecules.

"The world of microscopy is shown through some of the most amazing images in this film," said John Williams, FEI's vice president of strategic marketing. "It is truly exciting to be a part of it and to be able to show people things that exist all around them, but they are unable to see, until now. I think the film will be very beneficial in helping to get students at various grade levels interested and engaged in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)."

OMSI recently renovated its 300-seat, four-story giant screen theater and reopened in December 2013. The projection system is entirely digital with 4K technology and 3D capability, making it possible to show a greater range of content than ever before, including live satellite feeds and Blu-ray. Additionally, OMSI is the first museum in North America – and the first science center in the world – to feature a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos surround sound system. Visitor comfort was also enhanced. Seats were replaced with tables in select upper rows to provide more legroom with the added benefit of a convenient eating place.

FEI employees and their families will view the movie at OMSI during an employee event on January 28. About 900 people are expected to fill the Empirical Theater in three separate showings over the course of the evening.

"Mysteries of the Unseen World" is now showing daily at 11 am and 3 pm at OMSI, visit https://www.omsi.edu/empirical-theater for pricing or to purchase tickets.
