Huge Gap in Prices for Upper Deck vs. Premium Seating at Super Bowl XLVIII

Lack of Demand for Upper-Level Seats Becomes the Driving Force behind Falling Prices for Super Bowl Tickets

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 28, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A report released this morning by TicketCity, a leading ticket marketplace that specializes in sports events, reveals that the climate is creating one of the largest gaps between Super Bowl ticket prices for lower-level versus upper-level seats in recent years.

The ticket price for an upper-level seat at Super Bowl XLVIII is 54% less on average compared to lower-level seats. This is a big gap compared to ticket prices in 2013, when the difference in price was less than 30% on average. The average ticket sale price for an upper-level seat as of January 28th is $2,113, with tickets listed as low as $1379. This means fans can purchase an upper-level Super Bowl ticket for as little as the average cost for a one-day ticket to The Masters ($1384). In comparison, the average ticket price for lower-level seats is $4,595, largely as a result of fans willing to pay a premium for suites and the promise of a buffer from the wind.

"In addition to being one of the largest NFL stadiums in total seating, holding the Super Bowl at Metlife Stadium will mean a big opportunity for fans as ticket prices for upper deck seats continue to fall," said TicketCity Communications Director Meredith Owen. "Right now the forecast is showing a small chance of precipitation, but the small risk may pay off in scoring some of the cheapest super bowl tickets on the market."

While the NFL requires that a Super Bowl hosting stadium must have an average temperature of 50 degrees or higher in February or be held in an indoor climate-controlled facility, this requirement was waived to take advantage of the opportunity to hold the big game in the New York region. In fact, despite falling prices for upper-level seats, a recent study found Super Bowl XLVIII is still set have the biggest financial impact ever.
