Volvo scholarship for research on vehicular systems and hybrid technology

The Håkan Frisinger Foundation for Transportation Research will be awarding the
2013 scholarship to Professor Lars Nielsen at Linköping University. Lars Nielsen
will receive the scholarship of SEK 250,000 for his national and international
successes in vehicular systems research as well as hybrid technology, where
Nielsen has been a strong contributor to the research development of national
hybrid technology within The Swedish Hybrid Vehicle Centre (SHC).
“Lars Nielsen started some 20 years ago to establish a successful research team
within vehicular systems at Linköping University. Strengthened by international
networks, the team research combines a scientific base with relevant industrial
question formulations in cooperation with Swedish automotive industry,” says Bo
Egardt, Professor of Control Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in
his nomination.

Linköping University has also nominated Lars Nielsen as a very strong candidate
and emphasizes his research achievements and industrial collaborations.

Lars Nielsen’s research focuses on applying control engineering models and
methodology within vehicular systems. It is a wide research range – from control
engineering models of the combustion engine via hybrid technology to logistics.
Nielsen’s research and importance for platooning; to be able to optimize the
distance between autonomous vehicles with the aid of intelligent control
systems, is also being highlighted.

So far, Lars Nielsen’s tutorials have resulted in 30 research diplomas, several
times in collaboration with industry. He is considered internationally to be one
of the most well-known Swedish vehicle researchers with more than 100
international publications.

The scholarship will be presented by the Håkan Frisinger Foundation at a seminar
held in Swedish on April 10 at the House of William Chalmers, Södra Hamngatan
11, Gothenburg.
