Entropic to Discuss 4K Upscaling and Advancements in HEVC Compression Technologies During Advanced Television's 4K/HEVC Roundtable

LONDON, Feb. 6, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced its participation on the Advanced Television 4K/HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Codec) roundtable in London. This roundtable, led by Advanced Television's Chris Forrester, will address how the Pay-TV ecosystem is embracing the new HEVC compression standard for Ultra-HDTV and greater transmission efficiencies. Entropic's Vice President of Sales for Europe, Middle East and India, Noel McKenna, will discuss Entropic's latest HEVC set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) as well as provide insight as to how Entropic's silicon and software solutions are ideal in helping operators use their existing MPEG distribution infrastructure to upscale High Definition (HD) content to 4K – simply through the use of Entropic's advanced SoC technologies.

Earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014, Entropic unveiled its EN7300-series, a fully-integrated SoC that integrates HEVC decoding, Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®) 2.0 home networking, dual DVB-S/S2 demodulators using full-band capture satellite tuning and 3D graphics acceleration. The new SoC offers increased video efficiency with 1080p60 HEVC decoding to empower operators to save transmission bandwidth relative to H.264 or MPEG-2.

Additionally at CES 2014, Entropic demonstrated its high performance video processing solution which scales and enhances the 4K presentation of legacy video formats on an UltraHD display by upscaling HD resolution to 4K. Leveraging the strength and performance of Entropic's EN7590, Entropic can help operators manage the transition to an All-IP infrastructure and upgrade to HEVC architectures.

"We have a portfolio of SoC solutions that enables Pay-TV operators to evolve their networks, on their timetables," said Noel McKenna. "Whether operators want to minimize bandwidth strain by deploying our advanced HEVC silicon/software solutions or leverage our 4K upscaling SoC to fill the gap created by 4KTV's not having sufficient content to display – we can give operators a cost-effective migration path to next-generation viewing experiences across multiple display types."

Entropic's EN7590 is a high-performance (5500 DMIPS) SoC with a superior architecture. It utilizes a dual-core ARM® Cortex™-A9 processor with Neon™ multimedia acceleration, leverages Entropic's innovative spatial scaling techniques and digital TV know-how acquired from Philips Research Labs.

The 4K/HEVC panel will be a taped session on Friday, February 7, 2014, and will air online via the Advanced Television website. Panel highlights will also be captured in the March/April 2014 edition of Euromedia, which will be distributed at NAB.
