Orlando Plastic Surgeon Argues for Non-Surgical Cosmetic Care in Surgical Setting

Dr. James A. Matas Discusses Why He Believes Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments Should Be Performed at a Plastic Surgery Facility as Opposed to a Free-Standing Medical Spa

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwired - Feb 18, 2014) - According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), over 10 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2012 with 83% of those being non-surgical. From these statistics, Dr. James A. Matas, a board-certified Orlando plastic surgeon, recognizes the high demand for non-surgical treatments. As a result of the growing numbers, many people are getting treatment at free-standing medical spas, as opposed to surgical facilities that offer spa services. While medical spas can provide favorable results, Dr. Matas emphasizes the consistently superior care and results offered by a board-certified plastic surgeon.

In his recent blog post entitled "Three Reasons to Visit a Surgeon for Non-Surgical Cosmetic Care," Dr. Matas points out that doctors may perform a wide variety of non-surgical spa treatments at their plastic surgery practices. He notes how this may include medical-grade skin care products to treat the effects of aging or acne, as well as facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. He says the most popular non-surgical treatment at his practice is injection-based facial rejuvenation, which includes BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane®, Radiesse®, and soon Juvéderm Voluma™ XC. In fact, ASAPS revealed that in 2012 alone, 4.9 million injections were administered, with 3.3 million being Botulinum Toxin Type A (the primary ingredient for BOTOX® Cosmetic and some other injectable products). As more people are turning to non-surgical cosmetic procedures to look younger and more refreshed, Dr. Matas stresses the importance of the setting and administrator to achieve best results.

Although standalone medispas are seeing an increasing number of patients, Dr. Matas says a plastic surgeon who also performs spa services offers "the best of both worlds." He believes a plastic surgery practice is the ideal setting for non-surgical cosmetic treatments because patients of his own practice, for example, receive a thorough evaluation in their consultation with both the surgeon and the full-time medical aesthetician. As a result, both surgical and non-surgical options are weighed, and the patient can better understand the potential, as well as the limitations, of specific procedures in relation to their aesthetic goals.

Dr. Matas recommends those interested in non-surgical cosmetic treatments consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. By doing so, he says patients can often benefit from treatment performed or supervised by extensively trained doctors in an accredited facility with the highest standards of care in place. As non-surgical cosmetic care is predicted to continue growing, Dr. Matas hopes those interested will seek the most qualified doctors and most favorable locations for treatment.
