SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 25, 2014) - LightPointe, the number one manufacturer of outdoor point-to-point wireless data bridges which utilize laser transmission and hybrid radio-laser technology, announced the availability of the industry's first Software Defined Free Space Optics (SD-FSO) products. Utilizing remotely enabled software keys, the new wireless bridges can be configured at aggregated network capacities of 500 Mbps, 1,000 Mbps, or an impressive 2,000 Mbps either at the time of installation or years later as a customer's network throughput demand grows -- thus protecting the customer's equipment investment.
"These 5th generation laser bridges take the performance, scalability, and reliability of outdoor point-to-point Ethernet connectivity to a new level and provide our customers with a future-proof solution that can grow with their network," said Dr. Heinz Willebrand, CEO of LightPointe. "AireBridge products are a leap ahead of the competition in flexibility and affordability. Compared to competing wireless bridges, which a customer typically orders with a specific data transmission speed and locked-in hardware capabilities, AireBridge features and bandwidth are controlled by software which can be remotely upgraded at any time depending on the customer's needs. The customer can even upgrade just one side of the link if desired. For example, an organization with a building which receives more data than it sends can install a lower bandwidth unit on that building, and a Gigabit capacity unit on the opposite side of the link -- a feature referred to as asymmetric traffic distribution."
In addition to the AireBridge Series being field upgradeable to faster data rates, each wireless bridge in the new series can also be field upgraded to LightPointe's patented always-on HyBridge technology, which operates in highly secure, super-fast laser transmission mode nearly 100% of the time. This weather aware "rtMAP" system is unique in that it constantly monitors transmission performance in real time and automatically selects the best technology and path -- laser or radio frequency -- for all conditions. LightPointe customers essentially get two wireless bridges for the cost of one, and the peace of mind of knowing that the link is always on. In addition, the AireBridge Series offers low latency and full duplex capability, providing the ability to transmit and receive simultaneously at different bit rates, a feature which is beneficial for applications such as VoIP and Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks, as well as manufacturing, HD video streaming, security camera monitoring, and other scenarios where most of the bandwidth requirement is in one direction.
LightPointe has deployed over 16,000 wireless solutions since 1998, including optical communication bridges, 60 GHz (V-band) links, and 70/80 GHz (E-band) millimeter wave radios. The new AireBridge Series enables organizations such as businesses, hospitals, government agencies, and schools to connect their buildings wirelessly at gigabit capacity data rates, without trenching for cables or paying for expensive leased-lines which are typically far slower than a GigE laser bridge connection.
