Battelle in Panel Discussion on Vehicle Cybersecurity Issues

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Mar 5, 2014) - A leader in Battelle's cybersecurity division will be a panelist at the Connected Car Pavilion event, hosted by Waggener Edstrom Communications and automotive expert Doug Newcomb, in Austin, Texas on March 8 to discuss the future of connected car technology. The event takes place at 101 Red River Street, across from the Austin Convention Center.

Karl Heimer, Senior Research Director of Battelle's Cyber Innovation Unit will join Judith Bitterli, (Chief Marketing Officer, AVG Technologies), Damon McCoy (Assistant Professor, Computer Science Department, George Mason University) and Catherine McCullough (Executive Director, Intelligent Car Coalition) in a panel discussion entitled "The Car Hacks Are Coming - How the Auto Industry Can Safeguard Connected Cars."

Soon after joining Battelle in 2011, Heimer founded its Center for Advanced Vehicle Environments (CAVE), a research unit which he now leads. The group is dedicated to creating security products for connected vehicles and extending both knowledge and awareness of critical cybersecurity issues which will affect current and future vehicles. It is currently engaged in both long-term security projects and shorter term "gap-filler" technologies which can mitigate potential cyberattacks on vehicles. Heimer and his team are currently engaging key organizations in or associated with the automotive industry to test and comment on an alpha grade version of its vehicular IDS (Intrusion Detection System) product known as NEM (an engineering working title).

In addition to ongoing research and product development in the security of on-board computers in vehicles, Battelle has a long history of working with both the automotive industry and the government, going back as far as the development of both cruise control and the anti-lock braking systems in the 1960s. More recently, Battelle scientists and engineers have been working on projects for the U.S. Department of Transportation and commercial clients that address safety and mobility research and development. In the world of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, Battelle has for the last decade been involved with research on crash safety and collision avoidance in cars, trucks and buses.
