San Antonio Chiropractor Urges Patients to Try Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

SAN ANTONIO, March 16, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- San Antonio chiropractor Dr. Donald Phillips, DC strongly urges individuals with chronic neck or back pain to try non-surgical spinal decompression therapy before considering surgical options. The chiropractor cites recovery times after surgery, as well as the potential for complications, as reasons why a non-surgical option should be explored.

Dr. Phillips, DC says non-invasive spinal decompression relieves chronic back pain without the risks commonly associated with surgery. Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that the chiropractor says is effective for relieving chronic back pain without the risks associated with surgery and other types of long-term treatment.

Nerves protrude from between each vertebra, extending from the spinal cord then branching out to the rest of the body. When discs become herniated, vertebrae become misaligned, and develop boney growths on facet joints. When discs become worn out, the disc material or the bones of the spine press against nerves to cause uncomfortable symptoms. Symptoms of spinal nerve compression include pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, unsteadiness. In severe cases, paralysis or loss of bladder or bowel control may occur.

Without treatment, the pressure against nerves increases to cause chronic discomfort and dysfunction. Before the development of non-invasive spinal decompression treatments, patients had to endure surgery. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons describes two surgical spine decompression procedures: open surgery involving a 5 – 6 inch incision and minimally invasive techniques that require smaller incisions. While minimally invasive techniques result in smaller incisions, the patient still faces surgical risks without any guarantee the surgery will work.

Dr. Donald Phillips, DC says the greatest benefit of non-invasive spinal decompression is that it relieves pain effectively and safely and that most patients feel better after each treatment. He points out, "There are no surgical complications associated with spinal decompression because it is completely non-invasive and non-surgical." Spinal decompression relieves pain by reducing the pressure bones exert on nerves. The patient lies face down or on his or her back on a special table with one set of straps wrapped around the waist and another around the chest. The table moves in a way that gently relieves the pressure bones apply to the nerves. Spinal decompression is safe for long-term use by almost all patients who need relief from chronic pain.

The San Antonio chiropractor adds, "Non-surgical spinal decompression can allow patients to return to the physical activities they love, and just make it through the day with less pain and discomfort."
