COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Mar 24, 2014) - Two birds. One stone. Roots of the idiom can be traced to an ancient Chinese parable, Greek mythology and philosopher Thomas Hobbes. But whoever said it, Battelle and Winner Water Services are doing it thanks to a grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).
Here's the throw: In Pennsylvania, more than 300 million gallons of polluted water called acid mine drainage (AMD) exists in and springs out of abandoned coal mines every day, impacting more than 3,000 miles of streams. And the oil and gas (O&G) industry requires hundreds of millions of gallons of water to perform resource extraction using hydraulic fracturing. Battelle and its venture company Winner Water Services will use a $1.2 million grant from DOE to clean the AMD at a site in Butler County, PA and make the treated water available to O&G companies drilling nearby. An additional grant of nearly $500,000 from DCED will further aid the two-year project.
Working at abandoned coal mine sites in Pennsylvania, Battelle and Winner Water will continue to optimize its self-developed technology HydroFlex™. The system removes sulfate to concentrations below 100 mg/L and common metals (e.g., iron and aluminum) below drinking water standards. The efficiency of the technology has been validated in previous laboratory and field demonstrations. In addition, the byproducts from the system have traditionally been used for commercially viable products such as common water treatment chemicals and liquid fertilizer.
"This grant will further establish us as a bona fide provider of clean, affordable water to the O&G industry," said Winner Water CEO John Ontiveros. "At Winner Water, we believe that producing water that's environmentally sound and economically sensible is the best thing for everyone."
