Unlike conventional fuel cell designs dominated by plate and frame geometry that is prone to leakage due to the large number of linear seals and complex gasket arrangements, the disclosed technology utilizes a cylindrical design, placing tubular membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) in serial and/or parallel configuration, (depending on desired application), significantly reducing points of failure, and that failure in a single cell does not result in failure of the overall system. In addition, the cylindrical design is extremely compact enabling smaller efficient fuel cells to be developed for portable power applications. The easy multi-chamber refueling mechanism (similar to lighter refueling) enables remote refueling offering multiple opportunities for manufacturers looking for recharging mechanisms that do not require connection to electrical power.
A working prototype to illustrate the suitability of this fuel cell technology as a replacement for conventional batteries has also been developed in the form of a standard D-Cell battery.
