MORRISTOWN, NJ--(Marketwired - May 8, 2014) - For dentists Edward Romano, DDS and Matthew Vaccaro, DDS of Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey, the dedication to support U.S. troops is almost as critical as providing patients with the comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry procedures they need. Since 2007, the New Jersey dental practice has continually provided military care packages to the men and women serving overseas.
According to Dr. Romano, each year represents an opportunity to adopt a different soldier and unit -- generally someone the New Jersey dentist knows personally. This year's soldier is a 25 year-old young man. "That way it's a personal touch," says Dr. Romano. "We know it's going to a specific soldier and unit. It kind of gives us a touch of home too because it's a guy from our own backyard that we are taking care of."
In a recent blog post titled, "Help Support U.S. Troops With Our Donation Drive!," Dr. Romano says some of the items they commonly require are nonperishable goods, such as socks and batteries. The dentists also literally make a sweet exception for patients to donate candy to the soldiers, as it is one of the comforting items from home most frequently requested, according to Dr. Romano.
With a marine father and a cousin who served abroad, supporting members of the military is a personal and empathetic cause, explains Dr. Romano. He encourages all of the practice's patients take a moment to look at the ongoing billboard list in the office and consider donating. Once all items for a care package have been met, the box is prepared and then given to the United Services Organization.
At Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey, the goal is for packages to be sent out once a week. With many letters and emails from the soldiers expressing their gratitude, Dr. Romano says the care packages are a gesture of support that go a long way, reminding military men and women that the people back home are always thinking of them. Some troop members have even stopped by the practice upon their return home to offer Drs. Romano and Vaccaro, the staff, and all those who participated in the donation efforts their thanks in person.
Now in their seventh year of providing care packages, Dr. Romano says it has become a rewarding, heartfelt tradition he plans on continuing until all of the country's troops are safely home.
