Houston Plastic Surgeon Reveals His Unique Technique for Male Breast Reduction

Dr. James F. Boynton Highlights What Distinguishes His Less-Invasive Male Breast Reduction Technique From Other, More Traditional Gynecomastia Treatments

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - May 13, 2014) -  Gynecomastia is a common condition characterized by the abnormal development and enlargement of male breast tissues. According to Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction? -- a recent blog post authored by Houston plastic surgeon James F. Boynton, MD -- "Both teens and adults are bothered by this condition, especially men in their forties who have begun to develop excessive breast tissue or have been struggling with the condition since they were in high school."

For men experiencing gynecomastia, Dr. Boynton notes, "The good news is, male breast reduction surgery can be an excellent option to improve the appearance of gynecomastia, and just about everyone can be considered a good candidate." At his practice, the Houston plastic surgeon has performed male breast reduction for patients 15 to 70 years of age.

One key reason most of Dr. Boynton's patients can be considered good candidates has to do with his less-invasive approach to male breast reduction. The Houston plastic surgeon defines his technique as "chest wall sculpting with a 'pull-through' or 'mini-strip' excision of the 'fibrous' gynecomastia tissue." In essence, the procedure is a concentrated liposuction of the chest that employs specialized cannulas to extract breast and fat tissues through two small puncture incisions. Any remaining fibrous tissue is then removed in "strips" through one of the two small "puncture" liposuction incisions without the need for additional incisions.

"What my technique effectively does," says Dr. Boynton, "is it shapes and sculpts the chest, as well as removes the stubborn 'bud,' 'bump,' or 'mass' of tissue below the areola that often causes nipples to protrude ('puffy nipples,' in layman's terms). The bonus is, the diameter of the areola will often 'shrink,' in many cases, which is something that traditionally has required a full periareolar incision (an incision all the way around the areola) to achieve."

In regard to recovery from male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Boynton notes his technique often requires little downtime, adding that many of his patients have been able to return to work within a day or two of surgery. Additionally, the Houston plastic surgeon says he often issues postoperative compression garments that provide appropriate levels of pressure to the treatment area. This, along with scar tissue and post-lymphatic massage, can further facilitate recovery, he says.
