RESTON, VA--(Marketwired - May 16, 2014) - The Spinal Research Foundation (a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) presents its 7th annual We've Got Your Back Race for Spinal Health on May 17th hosted at the flagship site, Virginia Spine Institute (1831 Wiehle Road, Reston, Virginia), a world-class leader in spinal health care. The We've Got Your Back national race series is a celebration of those who have overcome debilitating spinal health issues through successful treatments, hard work, and determination.
This event historically draws 1,000 participants, hundreds of whom are celebrated Spinal Champions; those who have overcome neck or back pain. Spinal Champions in attendance typically include Washington Redskins players, professional athletes, and Olympians. The race series raises nearly $200,000 annually to provide life-changing research, education and patient advocacy for those suffering from neck or back pain. Each event consists of a timed 5K race, a 1 mile family-friendly run/walk, and a spinal health fair to celebrate the accomplishments of Spinal Champions.
Joining hundreds of other Spinal Champions with similar stories, Edith Lincoln shares: "Being energetic and active I never thought back pain would happen to me. One night, I woke up alone, away from home, and unable to walk. It was a long frightening journey but thanks to fantastic doctors and the latest research, I have my life back. I can walk. I can run. Today, I'm fully recovered and anxious to run my first We've Got Your Back race."
In 2007 back pain affected 27 million adults, an estimated 8 in 10 Americans as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Back pain is the second leading cause of missed work days, outpaced only by the common cold. "Back and neck pain is a serious medical issue that will affect the majority of Americans at some point in their lives. We are proud to be a national resource to patients providing resources, knowledge, and hope as they embark upon a journey to full recovery," said Lawrence Korchnak, Chief Development Officer of the Spinal Research Foundation.
