Minneapolis Facial Plastic Surgeon Explains Benefits of Gauged Earlobe Repair

Dr. Jess Prischmann Says Gauged Earlobe Repair Can Restore a Natural-Looking Appearance for People Who May Now Be Facing Professional Challenges Because of Decisions Made When They Were Younger

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwired - May 27, 2014) - Ear gauging is a process that involves inserting large plugs into an ear piercing to gradually stretch the skin. This can create the appearance of an enlarged hole in the earlobe, as well as excess, sagging skin. However, for those who have had second thoughts about having their ears gauged, there are ways to restore the appearance of the ears.

Minneapolis facial plastic surgeon, Jess Prischmann, MD, says gauged earlobe repair is becoming an increasingly popular procedure at her practice. She says this is often due to the challenges people with gauged ears tend to face, especially in their professional lives. Dr. Prischmann notes that her practice receives several phone calls requesting information on the procedure, and she evaluates gauged ears weekly.

"The typical patient is someone who puts plugs in as a teenager, but now regrets it or feels that they are a professional impediment," says Dr. Prischmann, adding that many patients feel they are judged negatively by prospective employers and co-workers.

In a two-part blog series on her website, Dr. Prischmann discusses other reasons patients may benefit from gauged earlobe repair, as well as what they can expect from the procedure. In the first blog post in the series, "Are Gauged Ears Sabotaging Employment Opportunities?", Dr. Prischmann says that many people with gauged earlobes experience a variety of obstacles as adults. She says the unnatural look of the ears created by gauging can cause:

  • Undesirable attention to the earlobes
  • Opposition from parents, family, and friends
  • Negative judgments from employers and co-workers
  • Difficulty obtaining a job

In the second blog post in the series, titled "How Can I Repair My Gauged Earlobes?," Dr. Prischmann discusses the relatively quick and easy procedure of gauged earlobe repair. She says the excess skin must first be removed, then the earlobe will be reconstructed into a more natural shape. Dr. Prischmann notes that gauged earlobe repair is performed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort, and the procedure typically can be completed in about 30 minutes per ear.

With gauged earlobe repair, Dr. Prischmann says people no longer have to experience unsolicited attention to their ears and/or negative judgments in their professional and personal lives. She notes that it is often a very quick procedure, and that the results typically look very natural. "The scars [from the procedure] usually fade very nicely with time and the ears can be re-pierced eventually."
