Washington Eye Doctors Reveal Tips for Best Summer Sun Protection

MT. In a recent blog post, titled "Protecting Your Eyes from UV Damage," the practice makes sure its patients are well informed on how to care for their eyes during the upcoming bright summer months.

While the eye doctors recognize many of their patients already know they should be protecting their eyes from the sun, they want to ensure their patients are also informed about the best methods of protection as there are dangers from the sun that some people may not consider. "Believe it or not, your eyes can actually sunburn too," the blog post reveals. "You can burn your retina from direct sun exposure, and retinal damage is always going to cost you." The post also highlights that just as continuous UV exposure causes one's skin to age faster, the same is true for the eyes, increasing the risks for developing cataracts and macular degeneration.

Sunglasses still remain the best way to protect the eyes outdoors, but the doctors stress that not all sunglasses offer the same degree of protection. "You need to make sure your lenses say they have 95% to 100% UVA/UVB protection," the blog post states. "A lot of lenses may say something about 'UV absorbing' or blocking, but those statements aren't regulated and might mean it only blocks 50% of UV light or less." The blog entry also notes that clear prescription lenses can be made to provide UVA/UVB protection.
