San Antonio Chiropractor Warns Local Residents of Summertime Back Risks

SAN ANTONIO, June 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With the rapid approach of summer, San Antonio chiropractor Dr. Phillips, DC wants San Antonio residents to understand that behaviors and activities can have a lasting impact on back health. The chiropractor emphasizes that education and prevention are the best cures for chronic back health issues. Dr. Phillips recommends a few small changes that yield big results for maintaining good back health all summer long.

Summertime is upon the residents of San Antonio. For many, this means a return to favorite activities as well as an increase in physical exertion and activities. "From gardening to golf, and all points in between," warned San Antonio chiropractor, Dr. Donald Phillips, of Dr. Phillips Chiropractic, Nutrition, and Wellness, "hidden risks lurk when it comes to back pain and injuries."

A healthy back is critical for full enjoyment of the beautiful summertime weather San Antonio has to offer its residents, says the chiropractor. He adds that remaining active throughout the summer is critical for maintaining a healthy back and overall lifestyle. San Antonio has an abundance of opportunities to do just that with activities like hiking, golf, bicycling, and more to keep residents active.

However, after a winter of low impact activities, Dr. Phillips suggests that it's better to ease into some of the more challenging activities that might strain an otherwise healthy back. He recommends starting with easier hikes on smaller trails and working up to the more aggressive and intense hiking activities. Likewise, he recommends that golfers practice a few days on putting greens and driving ranges or play a nine-hole round before hitting the course for a full 18.

Bending at the waist is another common culprit for back problems, according to Dr. Phillips. He recommends bending at the knees and wearing a supportive lift belt when lifting heavy objects to help prevent back injuries from activities such as moving patio furniture around, setting up outdoor play areas, and loading heavy luggage for summer vacations.

San Antonio residents often wear flip flops when out and about during summer, says Dr. Phillips, but he warns against the practice. The chiropractor stated "People should get rid of flip flops in favor of shoes that provide adequate support, or purchase orthotics and sandals with better support."

The San Antonio chiropractor recommends regular chiropractic adjustments as a way to maintain quality of life and maximize summertime enjoyment for all San Antonio residents. He says regular checkups with a chiropractor allow people to discover potential problems early and "Avoid bigger problems down the road – especially for those who aren't athletes."
