Orlando Plastic Surgeon Reveals Two Driving Factors Behind Top Plastic Surgery Procedures

Dr. James Matas of Advanced Centre for Plastic Surgery Reflects on the Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Trends From 2013, Noting Two Major Trends That Influenced Their Popularity

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwired - Aug 7, 2014) - The 2013 plastic surgery statistics report was recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), providing a detailed look inside the trends of surgical and minimally invasive treatments in the U.S. Dr. James A. Matas, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Orlando, finds the procedural rankings for the nation to be consistent with the procedures he performs most often at his practice. He recognizes the trends to be a direct impact of two factors influenced by the economy: cost and downtime.

The top three surgical procedures, as revealed by ASPS, were breast augmentation (290,000), nose reshaping (221,000), and eyelid surgery (216,000). For cosmetic minimally invasive procedures, botulinum toxin type A took first place (6.3 million) followed by soft tissue fillers (2.2 million) and chemical peels (1.2 million). As mentioned in his blog post, "ASPS Releases Top Plastic Surgery Procedures of 2013," Dr. Matas believes these procedures ranked most popular because they are of a relatively moderate cost, allowing more people to afford them utilizing limited discretionary income.

In addition to the cost of plastic surgery procedures, Dr. Matas acknowledges the recovery period to be a major deciding factor for patients. He says that many people cannot afford to take much time off work, requiring them to select a procedure with little downtime. This, he notes, is a major reason why cosmetic minimally invasive procedures, specifically, reached an all-time high of 13.4 million last year.

With continuous advancements being made in plastic surgery, Dr. Matas says patients can expect better results than ever before. He does warn, however, that patients should seek a qualified professional for their procedure -- board certification for a plastic surgeon and medical licensure for an aesthetician. By doing so, Dr. Matas believes people are more likely to undergo safe procedures that can help them achieve their aesthetic goals.
