LEHI, Utah, Aug. 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A Georgia military family was surprised with $5,480 after their home was completely destroyed by lightning.
The Corry family's home was destroyed when lightning struck their home and it burned to the ground. The story drew national attention from USA Today as the local community rallied around the Corry family to help them put their lives back together.
The father, Phillip, had recently returned home from serving our country in Iraq and found his home and personal possessions completely destroyed.
"It was devastating to have everything you own burned to the ground," Phillip said. "We were so grateful for all wonderful people that have reached out and helped our family."
The neighborhood rallied around the Corry family and helped them receive donations of food, clothing, books, school supplies and money.
President of LowVARates, Eric Kandell, heard about the story and began rallying a company wide effort to help the Corry family.
"Once we heard about what happened to the Corry family we knew we wanted to help them and donate as much money as possible to get them back on their feet," Kandell said. "Phillip has served our country for many years and his family deserves the money we were able to donate."
LowVARates was able to raise $2,740 through very generous employee donations. When owner of Liberty Title, Sally Farrar and Kelly Ogden, heard the Corry story, the company stepped in and decided to match the donations of LowVARates bringing the total to $5,480.
"When we heard about the Corry family and the tragedy that struck there family we knew we wanted to donate," Farrar said. "We hope and pray the money donated will help the Corry family get back on their feet and recover from this hardship."
The $5,480 check was delivered on Friday August 22nd to the Corry family. The family was extremely surprised and grateful for the donation.
"I'm speechless and so grateful for this generous donation. Our family is so grateful to LowVARates and Liberty Title and we can't thank them enough," Phillip said. "It feels like we are dreaming with all the kindness and support we have received."
