NYC Plastic Surgeon 'Gives Back' by Helping Pediatric Burn Victims in Nicaragua

Dr. Stafford R. Broumand Joins APROQUEN Each Year to Help Provide Comprehensive Medical Care for Children in Nicaragua Who Have Suffered Severe Burns

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Oct 30, 2014) - Outside his practice, Manhattan plastic surgeon Stafford R. Broumand, MD devotes a considerable amount of time to "giving back" to the community through various philanthropic efforts. In addition to helping those in need both locally and nationally, Dr. Broumand's humanitarian work extends beyond the borders of the United States and into Nicaragua where he lends his surgical knowledge and expertise to a charitable foundation called APROQUEN.

Established in 1991, APROQUEN is a Managua-based organization devoted to helping pediatric burn victims in Nicaragua who cannot afford proper medical treatment. The non-profit foundation offers free and comprehensive care until the age of 15 for children who have been severely burned (as well as for those who have developed physical malformations like cleft lip/palate). Specialized services provided for every pediatric burn victim who comes to APROQUEN's Burn Clinic include reconstructive surgery, rehabilitative treatment, preventative education, and emotional support.

Dr. Broumand, whose medical training included a Fellowship in burn reconstruction surgery at Shriners Burns Institute, travels annually to Nicaragua in order to consult with the APROQUEN surgical team and advise on complex reconstructive cases. He says he developed a unique compassion and empathy for burn victims during his aforementioned training, and having witnessed first-hand the effect both the physical and mental scars can have on their lives, he feels called to do his part in making a difference.

"Among the countless number of lives APROQUEN has impacted, there are two patient cases that really stand out to my staff and me," says Dr. Broumand. "The first is the story of a boy named Bryan who received care after being scalded by a pot of boiling water, and the second is the story of Marleng, a young woman who was engulfed in flames after her lantern exploded right in front of her face.

"Following their accidents, both Bryan and Marleng were treated extensively for their wounds at APROQUEN's Burn Center, and they have both gone on to live normal, happy lives. This is the kind of positive difference APROQUEN can make, which is why I am involved in this mission work."
