Spanning a wide range from standard to super telephoto, this lens incorporates one fluorite element and one Super UD element to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions. A new Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to minimize strong backlit flaring and ghosting for more contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery. Integrated into the lens's design is an updated Optical Image Stabilizer with three distinct stabilization modes. It corrects for camera shake and delivers clearer imagery by compensating for up to four stops of shutter speed. An enhanced zoom mechanism is also featured, which now rotates rather than using push-pull action. For even more personalized control, the zoom ring's torque can be adjusted. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, along with an inner focusing design, delivers fast, near-silent focusing performance to benefit both still and video usage, and offers a minimum focusing distance of 3.2', with a maximum magnification of 0.31x.
As part of the esteemed L-series, this lens is fully weather sealed for use in inclement conditions and also features fluorine coatings on both the front and rear elements for greater resistance against fingerprints and smudging. Additionally, this 100-400mm's included tripod collar has a revised design that allows it to be attached or detached while the lens is mounted on a camera body.
Also announced, and included with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is the dedicated ET-83D Lens Hood, which features a unique side window design to permit adjustment of rotating filters while the lens hood is attached.
