New Elsevier Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences Now Available

Biomedical and Life Science Researchers Now Have a New Source of Trustworthy Reference Content Updated as Science Progresses

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwired - December 03, 2014) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the availability of its new Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences. The module provides biomedical and life science researchers access to trustworthy reference content updated as science progresses. The new module will be demonstrated on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9 at Elsevier booth #424 at the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting in Philadelphia.

Reference Modules combine thousands of related reference work articles into one source of trustworthy information that is continuously updated by experts in the field. Other available Elsevier Reference Modules are in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering and Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences.

The new Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences includes:

  • Content from 15 Elsevier's authoritative, peer-reviewed reference works and 2 related multi-contributor books
  • More than 4770 articles that are continuously reviewed, updated as needed and then time stamped by the expert editorial board
  • Intuitive subject hierarchies, designed by the editorial board, that make it easy to navigate and find essential information
  • Linking to relevant journal articles and book chapters on ScienceDirect for additional information

"The [Reference] Module will provide a level of detail from the introductory, all the way to the most detailed explanations," said Ralph Bradshaw, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco and Cell Biology Subject Editor for the Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences. "And it's all inside a module that properly searched will allow you to find in a very rapid fashion information -- reliable information -- that you know is up to date."

Biomedical and life science researchers benefit by gaining access to the most current foundational reference content that was previously locked up during the lengthy publishing process, typically for five to seven years. Librarians are increasingly under pressure to stretch budgets further and secure content that contributes to meaningful research and learning. As a result, they see value in the Reference Modules' continuous reviews and updates by expert editorial boards, such as this one led by editor-in-chief Michael Caplan, PhD, MD, Yale School of Medicine.

Linda McManus, PhD researcher at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Pathobiology of Human Disease Subject Editor for the new Reference Module, commented on a key benefit of the module, "It's the interconnectedness. It is the ability to rapidly move from one [topic] to another and to understand how those pieces connect...the integration of materials. That is not easily achieved by any other means."

The Reference Module in Biomedical Sciences helps researchers access the increasingly interdisciplinary content they require. The interdisciplinary subjects in the new module include: cell biology, developmental biology, endocrinology, epidemiology and public health, genetics, human nutrition, immunobiology, medical biotechnology, medical microbiology, neurobiology, pathobiology of human disease, pharmacology, physiology, toxicology and virology.

Also included in the module is content that incorporates Elsevier's innovative Virtual Microscope, an integrated browser-based slide viewer providing access to high-resolution whole slide images. The Virtual Microscope is fully integrated with ScienceDirect and appears alongside articles that contain high-resolution slide images. The in-article viewer is fully interactive, and enables users to zoom in and navigate within the slide image alongside an article.

The new Reference Modules in Biomedical Science is available on ScienceDirect, Elsevier's full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from over 2,200 peer-reviewed journals and more than 25,000 book titles. Existing Reference Modules in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering, and Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences are also on ScienceDirect.
