FORT MYERS, FL--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2015) - Direct Heating and Cooling gave $1,450 in holiday presents and gift cards to two area families in need through its adopt-a-family campaign. Direct Heating and Cooling worked with 95.3 The River to promote the campaign where nominations were made on the Direct Heating and Cooling website.
"We received several nominations and I wish that we could have fulfilled them all," said Mitzie Lerner, co-owner of Direct Heating and Cooling. "It was our plan to only choose one family and provide an overall Christmas miracle, but to us, two nominations clearly stood out and we decided to help bring joy to both."
The first family chosen was the Jeffries Family. Direct Heating and Cooling provided $2,000 in gift cards for the purchase of new clothes and other essentials that the three kids, recently taken in by their deceased Mom's best friend, need.
The nomination in part stated, "I am nominating the Jeffries family; a girl age 17 and her brother and sister 14 and 16. These 3 kids have been through so much during their lives, but especially the last year, and I really think they deserve a pleasant surprise for once. Their mother passed away about 7 1/2 years ago when the kids were 6, 8, and 10. After that, they lived with their father from that point until earlier this year when they were removed from his care. These kids don't really have anyone and were going to be put in different foster homes when they contacted me (I was their mother's best friend). There was no way I could allow that to happen, so I took them in, although I myself am a struggling single parent. It was so bad that the son, who is 6'4, only had one pair of pants that didn't even fit and one pair of shoes. The only thing these kids want/need for Christmas is clothes and shoes. We do not get any type of gov't assistance."
The second family selected was the Glidden family. Direct Heating and Cooling provided the family with $400.00 for new tires for the family car. The Glidden's faced tragedy on October 27th when they lost their home and two of their beloved pets to an electrical fire.
The nomination stated, "They lost everything but the clothes on their backs. As they try to regroup and adjust they now have had their only vehicle break down. With trying to make Christmas special for their two children, they are facing huge vehicle repair bills. I know for sure that family would be thankful and grateful for anything they would be gifted, but I am sure tires for their family vehicle would be high on the list…."
Direct Heating and Cooling came up with the adopt-a-family campaign as a way to give back to the community. The company plans to make this a yearly tradition and looks forward to working with 95.3 The River again to find families just like those chosen to receive some "sprinkle joy" next year.
"We hope that the families we chose this year have had a better Christmas than they would have and we look forward to continuing the tradition of giving," added Ms. Lerner.
