Greensboro, NC, March 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Replacements, Ltd. is again taking the lead in the national fight for marriage equality in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm the right of same-sex couples to marry and to strike down individual state laws banning same-sex marriage.
The dinnerware retailer is one of 379 companies that joined an amicus brief filed on their behalf by law firms Morgan Lewis and WG+R Law Group. The brief makes the business case for marriage equality, arguing that varying state laws hinder employers' ability to attract and retain talent and to treat all employees equitably and consistently, making it increasingly hard to conduct business amidst a patchwork of competing laws and regulations.
Replacements was among a group of businesses that led the fight for marriage equality in North Carolina.
"We are fortunate that same-sex marriage is now legal in our state, but it's imperative that all Americans have this same right recognized," says Replacements' Founder and CEO Bob Page. "Having consistent laws across the nation will allow businesses large and small to honor their commitments to embrace diversity and treat all people fairly. This also has the potential to save millions of dollars, reducing an economic burden on businesses by cutting the cost of complying with different rules for who is married and where. We really need the Supreme Court to do the right thing and recognize the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry and to have those marriages recognized, regardless of state boundaries."
The brief represents companies ranging from smaller, family-owned businesses to major American corporations. Morgan Lewis filed the brief in the Obergefell v. Hodges case, which the High Court is expected to hear next month.
