EVERETT, Wash., March 22, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cornerstone Chiropractic is raising awareness about the benefits of extremity adjustments for pain management and whole body health. A misalignment in an extremity joint may cause pain and neurological problems, say chiropractors Dr. Michael Ilyankoff and Dr. Lisa Ilyankoff. While not all chiropractors provide extremity adjustments, Drs. Ilyankoff stressed that these are important for addressing pain that is triggered by an extremity problem. Adjustments to the wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles, knees and hips may be able to relieve pain and enhance mobility.
Chiropractic adjustments are not just for the spine; they are also beneficial for a patient's extremities, say the Cornerstone Chiropractic team.
"While chiropractors are best known for adjusting the spine, chiropractors also treat and adjust the extremities," said Dr. Michael Ilyankoff. "If an extremity subluxation is the real cause for a patient's pain, it's important to address this problem in addition to adjusting the spine. A singular focus on the spine can overlook other pain conditions."
Dr. Michael Ilyankoff and Dr. Lisa Ilyankoff both offer hands-on adjustments to gently restore proper alignment to extremity joints. These adjustments address joints in the wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles, knees and hips.
In some cases, spinal pain may actually be due to an extremity misalignment. One of the most common examples of this is lower back pain that is due to an over pronation of one of the three arches in the feet. Once the foot arches drop downwards and to the floor, this can trigger an inward rotation of the tibia and femur bones that places lateral pressure on the hips. Ultimately, this causes lower back pain, say Drs. Ilyankoff.
"Arch problems in the feet are a classic example of how an extremity misalignment can trigger pain in a patient's body," said Dr. Lisa Ilyankoff. "Another common example is upper and mid-back pain, neck pain and headache pain that is actually caused by a shoulder girdle misalignment. As chiropractors, our job is to identify these subluxations within the body, including in the extremities, and bring proper alignment back to these joints."
When patients first visit Cornerstone Chiropractic, the chiropractors begin by assessing the underlying misalignments that could be triggering a patient's pain. Diagnostic exams include a full assessment of the extremities.
"Once we have identified the misalignments that are at the root of a patient's pain, we will create custom treatment programs to relieve this pain," said Dr. Michael Ilyankoff. "We find that by integrating traditional spinal adjustments with extremity adjustments, we are able to deliver the highest quality care for our patients."
