CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - May 13, 2015) - MetalMiner™, the leading B2B resource providing unique insight, analysis and tools for North American manufacturers, released a video brief with interviews from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and Nucor Corp. on how the proposed EPA Clean Power Plan may impact both US manufacturers and other energy-intensive companies.
The short video, which can be viewed here, reveals just how concerned US manufacturers are regarding the cost of regulation, along with energy reliability as major hindrances to competing with their global peers. The consensus, supported by independent third-party studies, is the EPA has grossly underestimated the total cost of regulation.
"We're concerned this regulation may tip the balance a little too far to maybe what's unachievable from an economic standpoint," said Ross Eisenberg, VP, Energy and Resources Policy, NAM.
In coordination with this video, representatives from MetalMiner, NAM, Nucor and the Power Bureau will participate in an interactive video webinar on this topic Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m. CT. (Learn more and register here.)
The domino effect of regulatory and energy costs that could be brought on by the EPA's Clean Power Plan may have even further-reaching consequences. Those costs, borne by utilities to either shut down plants or make operational and technological improvements, will in turn be passed down to consumers. This could lead to an across-the-board rise in electricity prices, nationwide.
Manufacturers in the steel industry specifically rely on affordable energy for production to stay competitive in the global market. The impact of rising costs from the EPA Clean Power Plan would greatly reduce US manufacturers' ability to compete with their international counterparts who, in many cases, receive heavily subsidized energy.
