This Saturday, the Kebek Animal Rights Association (KARA)-with support from Georges Laraque, Simple Plan's David Desrosiers, PETA, Lush Cosmetics and the International Research Group for Animal Law-will lead Montreal's Second International March to Close Down All Slaughterhouses:
Date: | Saturday, June 13, |
Time: | 1 p.m. |
Place: | Square Saint-Louis, Montreal; the March concludes at Park La Fontaine |
Local animal rights organisations from Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City will again join KARA for the global event, which has origins in Paris. The demonstrators' aim is to open the eyes and hearts of people worldwide to the suffering of animals in slaughterhouses and to stress the urgency of rethinking society's exploitative relationship to animals.
"Of all the gratuitous suffering that humans inflict on animals, the industrial-scale breeding and slaughter for meat is the most flagrant, " notes Dr. Stevan Harnad, Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Sciences at UQAM and spokesperson for the march. "Yet most people are not aware of the enormity of the agony it really causes, nor of the fact that all that suffering is completely unnecessary for human health. To close down the slaughterhouses they must be opened."
Founded in 2012, KARA is an experienced and dynamic organizer of compelling public events for animal rights. Media networks Radio-Canada, CTV, La Presse and Le Journal de Montréal reported on last year's success.
