BOSTON, June 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Road Scholar's My Hometown series focuses on hometown America, an extraordinary week of learning and discovery of the people and charms in each of eight welcoming towns across the U.S. From Macon, Ga. to St. Paul, Minn., participants will explore each community's history and culture, meeting local leaders, musicians, teachers or artists, and learning what makes the town tick.

Steeped in history, music, and a revitalization of its downtown, Macon, Georgia and the stories that shape it today are the focus of this special learning adventure. Program highlights include a farm-to-table dinner at the elaborate Italian Renaissance-style Hay House, known as the "Palace of the South" in the mid-19th century; hearing from visionaries behind the nonprofit NewTown Macon share their blueprint for preserving and restoring the downtown and the city into a hub of culture; discovering stories of music greats with local connections such as Otis Redding, Little Richard, Percy Sledge, the Allman Brothers, Lynrd Skynrd, Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs and more.

Learn about the colorful history of this Rocky Mountain town from vantage points few others have enjoyed — a historic train ride through the nearby glacier-carved canyon, inside silver mines and soaring high above the mountains in a hot-air balloon. Participants will hear the story of Park City's first boom as they find out just how much silver was — and still is — hidden within its 1,800-mile network of mining tunnels.
