New Mondotrack WS track surface to serve as competition surface of 2016 Rio Olympic Games

Mondo and IAAF renew partnership

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Aug. 25, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mondo has announced that its new track surface, the Mondotrack WS, is to serve as the competition surface of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Mondo and Augusto Velloso, the Brazilian general contractor constructing the Engenhão Stadium for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, recently signed an agreement for Mondotrack WS to be the surface of the competition track and the warm-up tracks of the 2016 Games. Mondo and its Brazilian construction partner Playpiso will install the surfaces.

Rio will be the 11th Olympics for Mondo, the global leader in the track and field, indoor sport and contract flooring markets. The company began its Olympics participation at the 1976 Montreal Games, and became official supplier of athletic tracks and the competition surface beginning with the 1992 Barcelona Games. Mondo has served as the competition surface of the Olympics Games since 1992.

In addition, Mondo and the International Association of Athletics Federations announced the renewal of their partnership, which now goes through 2024. Mondo has been a partner of the IAAF since 1987, the year that marked the beginning of their collaboration to improve the sport's facilities and equipment. In 1999 Mondo was one of the first companies to obtain an IAAF-Certified Athletic Track Products certificate. Today Mondo's IAAF-Certified Athletic Track products include Mondotrack, Sportflex and Super X.

The company's tracks have been the competition surface of numerous IAAF World Championships, including 10 outdoor world championships, 13 indoor world championships, last month's IAAF World Youth Championships, and the 2014 and 2015 IAAF/BTC World Relays. Mondo's tracks also are installed in more than 40 IAAF Class 1- and 130 Class 2-certified facilities worldwide.

"The world governing body of athletics is proud to count Mondo as an IAAF Official Supplier and to renew its long-term partnership," said IAAF President Lamine Diack. "The IAAF World Athletics Series of events continues to benefit from the quality and technical expertise of Mondo. Its sports surfaces are globally recognized as being at the cutting edge, having been the stage for some memorable athletics performances, none more so than Usain Bolt's Olympic victories here in Beijing in 2008."
