Kirkman(R) Introduces PreNatal Advanced Care Vitamin and Mineral Formula with 5-MTHF

The form of folate usually prescribed has been folic acid. However, studies have shown that up to 20 percent of women have a genetic variant, which makes them unable to completely metabolize conventional folic acid. Certain gastrointestinal conditions can also prevent folic acid metabolization. 5-Methyltetrahydrafolate (5-MTHF) is an activated form of folate, making it far more bioavailable than folic acid.

In one study, subjects who were given 5-MTHF had 700 times the amount of total folate level in their blood as compared with those who were given an equivalent amount of folic acid.
