BOSTON, Sept. 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Patient Safety Foundation's Lucian Leape Institute has announced the speakers and agenda for its 8th annual Forum and Keynote Dinner to be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston.
The afternoon forum will examine the need for greater transparency in health care, particularly as it contributes to safer care. Earlier this year the Institute published a report calling for greater transparency between patients and health professionals, among health professionals, between organizations, and with the public, and the forum will feature insight into how transparency looks in practice.
Guest speaker Darrell A. (Skip) Campbell, Jr., MD, director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), will focus on the key role of leadership in creating transparency and how statewide collaboratives such as MSQC are helping to improve quality and safety. Attendees will also participate in breakout sessions led by Institute members and focusing on how to put the report's recommendations into practice. The afternoon will close with a panel discussion on communication, apology, and resolution following medical harm, featuring speakers affiliated with the Massachusetts Coalition for Communication and Resolution following Medical Injury.

A networking reception will begin the evening program, followed by dinner and a keynote address entitled "To Care Is Human" by Jonathan Perlin, MD, PhD, MSHA, FACP, FACMI. Dr. Perlin is president, clinical services, and chief medical officer at Hospital Corporation of America and current chair of the American Hospital Association.

The NPSF Lucian Leape Institute is named for Dr. Lucian Leape, adjunct professor of health policy, Harvard School of Public Health, and a renowned leader of the patient safety movement.
