BOSTON, Sept. 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Patient Safety Foundation's Lucian Leape Institute has announced the appointment of Professor Charles Vincent and Amy C. Edmondson, PhD, as new members, effective September 1.
Composed of thought leaders with a common commitment to advancing patient safety, the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute functions as a think tank to provide vision and context for health care safety efforts. Its work focuses on identifying and framing vital transforming concepts that require system-level attention and action.
Professor Vincent is professor of psychology at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Safety Research at Imperial College, London, where he served as director of the Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality while based in the Department of Surgery and Cancer. A clinical psychologist by training, he is the author of numerous articles and the book Patient Safety (2d Ed.), and editor of Clinical Risk Management (2001). From 1999 to 2003, Professor Vincent served as commissioner on the UK Commission for Health Improvement. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a senior investigator at the National Institute for Health Research in the UK.
Dr. Edmondson is Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School. She has authored more than 70 articles on leadership, teams, innovation, and organizational learning, as well as books, including Teaming: How Organizations Learn, Innovate and Compete in the Knowledge Economy (2012). She and her co-author received the 2004 Accenture Award for their article, "Why Hospitals Don't Learn from Failures: Organizational and Psychological Dynamics That Inhibit System Change" (California Management Review, Winter 2003).

The agenda for the September 17 event includes discussions about how greater transparency in health care can fuel better outcomes and safer care, as well as a panel discussion on communication, apology, and resolution after medical error, and a closing keynote address by Dr. Jonathan Perlin, chief medical officer at Hospital Corporation of America and current chair of the American Hospital Association.
