SNIA Announces ISO Acceptance of Latest Updates to Its Storage Management Initiative Specification

The Storage Network Industry Association's (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative (SMI) today announced that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have accredited the SMI Specification version 1.5 (SMI-S v1.5). The standard is designated as ISO/IEC 24775.

SMI-S v1.5 contains important new storage management functionality and the new ratification will further standardize and streamline storage management functions and features into a common set of tools that address the day-to-day tasks of the IT environment. SMI-S is now incorporated into over 1,000 storage products, allowing management application developers to support devices from multiple vendors quickly and reliably because they "look and behave alike."

New Features of SMI-S v1.5:

• Supports additional types of storage connectivity, as well as capabilities offered by newer storage networking devices
• Addresses operational requirements such as power monitoring
• New functionality for block storage devices includes support for replication, thin provisioning and refinements for how block storage is made available from multiple storage devices
• NAS device functionality, which now brings improvements in the way file storage is managed and shared
• Improvement on how storage networking fabrics can be managed and shared
• New functionality for hosts includes support for additional types of host bus adapters and for host-based RAID storage
•  The addition of over 50 new profiles to SMI-S 1.5
