SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 27, 2015) - Exalt Wireless, the leading innovator of next-generation wireless connectivity systems for private networks and Internet infrastructures, today announced that East Kentucky Network (EKN) has deployed Exalt ExploreAir microwave systems to backhaul cellular traffic in its LTE network.
Through its subsidiary Appalachian Wireless, EKN serves more than 100,000 cellular subscribers in Eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia. EKN had used T1 lines to backhaul 3G wireless traffic from its more than 230 cell sites, but LTE service demanded higher bandwidth and fiber links were prohibitively expensive or non-existent in many locations in the company's mountainous service area. By using Exalt's microwave systems, EKN was able to backhaul LTE traffic over distances of 10-12 miles per link with fiber-like speeds and high reliability.
"We considered a lot of microwave products, and we chose Exalt because they give us outstanding value, reliability, and performance," said Mike Johnson, director of technical operations at EKN. "We rely on microwave to connect many of our cell sites to the core network, and Exalt systems always give us trouble-free service."
EKN acquired Exalt systems through Exalt partner AirWay Technologies of Hebron, Kentucky. EKN deployed Exalt all-outdoor systems in the 6 GHz and 11 GHz licensed frequency bands. The microwave links in the EKN network deliver Ethernet with 300-400 megabits per second (Mbps) throughput.
"We like Exalt systems because they just work," said Stanton Neece, cellular maintenance supervisor at EKN. "They have built-in diagnostics which make them easy to deploy, and they deliver outstanding performance in all weather conditions."
EKN will continue to deploy Exalt microwave systems as it completes its LTE service rollout in the coming months.
"Mobile data subscribers across virtually all demographics are demanding a better user experience (UE). LTE services provide better UE but also require fiber-speed cell site backhaul. However, fiber isn't always available to rural service providers like EKN," said Amir Zoufonoun, CEO and founder of Exalt Wireless. "Our backhaul systems deliver fiber-like throughput with superior reliability over long distances and they can help bring up new LTE cell sites in days rather than weeks or months."
