LAKE WORTH, Fla., Nov. 01, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lake Worth Chiropractic & Wellness is treating cases of "text-neck" in its southeastern Florida offices. The condition is named for the problems in the neck and spine caused by the position individuals take when looking down at a smartphone or electronic device. While the human head weighs about 12 pounds, when an individual maintains proper posture, the neck and spine are designed to support its weight. When the same individual looks down, often for hours each day, at a device in their hands, the head's position places additional pressure on the neck and spine. At a mere 30 degree angle, the pressure increases to approximately 40 pounds, akin to carrying the weight of a small child.
According to Dr. Jack Cacic of Lake Worth Chiropractic & Wellness, "The discipline of chiropractic is ever evolving. As society presents new problems, we can apply our specialized knowledge of chiropractic care to find treatments and solutions. Any new behavior in society that changes our posture can greatly affect the health of our spine. Poor posture can cause unnecessary wear and tear on our spines, cause discomfort, and even lead to surgical intervention. With specialized chiropractic adjustments, we can adjust the spine back into proper alignment and effectively reverse the effects of text-neck before it comes to that."
Dr. Jack Cacic does not require that his patients stop using electronic devices altogether. "We aren't addicted to our devices as much as we are enraptured by the constant flow of information they present to us and requiring my patients to stop using them entirely would be unreasonable," said Dr. Cacic. "Instead we recommend that they take breaks, even micro-breaks at work, where they simply put the devices aside for a time. This could be as simple as not allowing devices to interrupt dinners or family time in the evening or taking a device-free lunch break or stroll to the copy machine during the work day."
Lake Worth Chiropractic & Wellness provides treatment for a wide range of postural and spinal issues including whiplash and auto related accident injuries. Dr. Cacic’s goals are to empower his patients with tools and chiropractic care that allow his patients to achieve their own total wellness.
