Medecision and Baystate Health: Population Health Management is an Evidence-Based Team Sport

Executives Challenge Healthcare Leaders to Put Data to Work at HIMSS 2015 Big Data & Healthcare Analytics Forum

WAYNE, PA and BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - November 05, 2015) - Medecision, the leader in population health management and connected care solutions for risk-bearing entities like provider- and payer-sponsored ACOs, hospitals, IDNs and health plans; and customer Baystate Health, one of the largest health systems in New England, will co-host a key session on population health management at the HIMSS 2015 Big Data & Healthcare Analytics Forum in Boston, November 5-6, 2015. Larry Schor, senior vice president of corporate development and analytics at Medecision, and Neil R. Kudler, MD, vice president and chief medical information officer at Baystate Health, will present "Population Health is an Evidence-Based Team Sport," challenging attendees to apply baseball's "box score" concept to measure and track their population health management efforts.

Conference attendees include senior healthcare leaders in payer, hospital and physician practice organizations. The session topic bolsters the forum's overarching focus on analyzing and transforming data into actionable information to influence quality and cost and address the lack of proven population health management best practices. Highlighted in the movie "Moneyball," the Oakland A's evidence-based approach to winning featured box scores, statistical summaries of baseball games used for continual improvements. Schor and Dr. Kudler will provide a practical approach to treating population health management like a team sport by using box scores to work as a system, anticipate and prevent risk, and proactively adjust care management strategies.

"Without a roadmap or much proven success, it's difficult for many healthcare organizations to get population health initiatives off the ground -- or see any true results," said Dr. Kudler. "We view the box score concept as the simple solution to this issue, using credible data and analytics to actually see what's going on in a population in real time and responding accordingly."

The session aligns with the work Medecision and Baystate Health have done across its long-standing, collaborative partnership. Focusing on achieving successful population health management, the two organizations have:

  • Founded the TechSpring Innovation Center, a collaborative initiative enabling the development, testing and piloting of emerging technologies to improve health outcomes in Western Massachusetts; and
  • Developed a four-pillared approach to population health, focused on access, outreach, engagement and care quality improvements.

"The keys to successful population health are data transparency, communication and incentives, which drive systemic performance, outcomes and continuous improvement of care delivery and cost," said Schor. "These are the goals Medecision and Baystate have collectively been working toward and have seen results from; we are confident the box score concept will help others in the industry see population health success, too."
