Lone Star Vision Encourages Community to Focus on Diabetes Awareness in November

PLANO, Texas, Nov. 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the staff at Lone Star Vision Eye Care & Optical want to use the opportunity to better educate the community about Diabetes and the vision-threatening risks to overall eye health. While people may be more familiar with diabetes-related circulatory problems, it’s not as well known that it can also significantly affect the eyes. “Diabetes can increase a person’s risk for developing other eye diseases,” said Dr. Todd Brantley, O.D. “People living with diabetes are 40 percent more likely to develop glaucoma and as high as 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts.”

Another associated health problem is diabetic retinopathy, which can cause blindness and is the leading cause of blindness in adults. Its early stages may not include any noticeable symptoms to patients, which is why regular examinations are highly recommended. “We encourage anyone with diabetes or a history of it in their family to schedule a comprehensive eye health exam at least once a year,” Dr. Brantley said. “November is a good month to help educate patients about diabetes risks and options, but we’re happy to answer questions from our patients any time of the year.” Early detection of diabetic retinopathy can lead to early treatment, and prevent potential damage to the health of a patient’s eyes.

This recommendation for regular visits isn’t just for patients concerned about diabetes. Dr. Brantley said regular exams can spot other diseases, plus any damage or injuries to the eye, or any areas of concern. It can also provide the optometrist with information about any health changes or any modifications to a patient’s prescription. “We’re proud to provide eye care services for families and patients of all ages,” Dr. Brantley said. “This includes everything from comprehensive eye care to providing the right glasses or contact lenses.”
