Express Employment Professionals today released new survey results revealing how many employers plan to give holiday bonuses and what they plan to give.
In a recent poll of businesses, 23% planned to offer cash, and 13% will hand out gift cards. A handful say they will give extra days off (3%), tangible gifts (2%), or pay raises (1%). An additional 18% say they will give some combination of benefits. Thirty-nine percent (39%) reported that they will not give holiday bonuses.
Workers were also asked what type of bonus they want. In a survey of Express Employment Professionals associates, a combination of benefits topped the list at 45%, while 22% said cash and 21% said a pay raise. Eight percent (8%) chose extra days off. Gift cards were not very popular at 3%, and only 1% chose tangible gifts.
"The holidays are always a time for businesses to say an extra 'thank you' to the people who keep their companies running. Employees certainly appreciate the added generosity, and employers appreciate the opportunity to show their gratitude," said Bob Funk, CEO of Express, and a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
"Of course, not every company who wants to give bonuses is able to. For many, the simple cost of doing business and the uncertainty of the future has been increasing lately. Not giving a bonus doesn't necessarily make an employer a Scrooge; it may reflect the still-difficult business environment. But regardless of the situation, every employer should take the time this holiday season to make sure their employees know they are valued and appreciated."
The survey of 373 businesses was conducted in July 2015. The businesses are current or former clients of Express Employment Professionals. The survey of 872 Express associates was also conducted in July 2015.
