VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - December 02, 2015) - The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) honoured the hard work and dedication of industry leaders during a ceremony at the Canadian Bioeconomy Conference in Vancouver, BC. Presented annually by the CRFA since 2005, the Green Fuels Awards recognize achievements in the development, commercialization and promotion of low carbon renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel in Canada.
"Green Fuels Awards recipients are respected industry leaders who help shape the future of our nation's bioeconomy," said CRFA Chair Jim Grey. "This year's award winners represent our industry's growth, commitment to local and national economic prosperity, and to transitioning to a low carbon economy and sustainable energy future."
The 2015 Green Fuels Awards recipients are:
The Green Fuels New Producer Award
Atlantic Biodiesel
The Green Fuels Industry Award
Dr. Jack Saddler, Professor, Forest Products Biotechnology/Bioenergy, Dean Emeritus, Faculty of Forestry - University of British Columbia
"Recognition from the CRFA means a lot to our employees, numerous suppliers and business partners that make up our larger family," said Michael Paszti, Chief Operating Officer, Atlantic Biodiesel. "CRFA's support and advocacy is critical to the Canadian biofuels industry and especially new participants like Atlantic Biodiesel. Much can be inferred about the health and prospects of an industry by its trade association, and the unified voice with which it speaks. New entrants like us are encouraged by the biofuel mandates spearheaded by CRFA, and see the imperative for alternatives to fossil fuels. Lots more growth is needed, and with the help of CRFA we as an industry have much to look forward to."
"It is an honour to receive this award from the CRFA, who has been at the forefront of 'encouraging' Canadian society to 'green-up' and 'carbon-down'," said Dr. Saddler. "I am, and have been, fortunate to work with some very smart, innovative and driven people. They deserve this award as much as me. I have also been lucky enough to work within farsighted organizations such as IEA and UBC. I could not do what I do without their support. My First Nations' friends encourage me to think in terms of what type of world we will live within seven-generations (the best a real-time oral history might span). Fossil fuels are finite. No matter their current cost, their use is unsustainable. Canada is blessed with sustainably managed bio-feedstocks and innovative people that can build our bioeconomy. I look forward to celebrating their accomplishments at future CRFA meetings."
The Green Fuels New Producer Award is presented to a new entrant into Canada's renewable fuels industry. Atlantic Biodiesel opened its new, state-of-the-art renewable fuel facility in Welland, Ontario, on June 25. The facility is one of the largest in North America, with a production capacity of 170 million litres of biodiesel and 15 million litres of high-grade glycerin per year.
The Green Fuels Industry Award is presented to an individual for outstanding dedication to the advancement of renewable fuels in Canada. Dr. Jack Saddler is a world leader in the conversion of forest residues into liquid fuels and chemicals. He sees the opportunity in Canada for biofuel and biorefinery technologies to bring about major changes to our sustainable energy future.
