NuoDB Recognized by Gartner for Critical Capabilities for Operational Database Management Systems

NuoDB Receives Highest Score for Distributed Variable Data Use Case; Ranks in Top Four for Other Three Use Cases

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - December 18, 2015) - NuoDB, the database for cloud-enabled global applications, today announced it has received the highest score in the Distributed Variable Data use case in Gartner's recently published report, "Critical Capabilities for Operational Database Management Systems*." NuoDB also received the second highest score in the Lightweight Events and Observations use case, tied for third in Hybrid Transaction/Analytical Processing (HTAP) and tied for fourth in Traditional Transactions.

As the highest product score given in the Distributed Variable Data use case (which requires automated management of distributed data), NuoDB received a score of 4.35 out of 5.

The report also states, "This Critical Capabilities report deals with key information management capabilities for operational use of data in database management systems." With scores resulting in a top four placement across all four database use cases, NuoDB believes the rankings are a direct result of the product's native ability to operate with low latency across multiple hosts or containers -- and even across two or more data centers -- while maintaining strict transactional consistency.

This report comes on the heels of another Gartner report, "When to Use New RDBMS Offerings in a Dynamic Data Environment**." In that report, published on November 18th, 2015, analyst Adam Ronthal notes the emergence of a new category of RDBMS vendors, the RDBMS "avant-garde."

In the note, he states, "Where the NoSQL vendors dispensed with SQL and relational tables as a standard interface (only to start to add them back in later on), these new RDBMS vendors started with a relational paradigm and built new architectures to support many of the features that developers, DBAs and operations teams sought in the NoSQL world: distributed processing, commodity hardware, elasticity and hybrid cloud flexibility."

It goes on to provide the following Strategic Planning Assumption: "Through 2019, 70% of new projects requiring scale-out elasticity, distributed processing and hybrid cloud capabilities for relational applications, as well as multi-data-center transactional consistency, will prefer an emerging RDBMS over a traditional RDBMS."

"Our customers have turned to NuoDB to bring together the best elements of traditional relational databases and NoSQL offerings," said Barry Morris, founder and executive chairman of NuoDB. "We've watched the 'NewSQL' category evolve into this newly coined 'avant-garde' category of databases, and are excited to see that our vision of a single database that can serve multiple use cases reflected."

Published on December 9, 2015, the Critical Capabilities report evaluates 20 vendors across nine capabilities: high-speed, high-volume processing, automated data distribution, multiple data types/structures, tunable consistency, continuous high-speed ingest, cloud/hybrid deployment, ACID support, programmability for HTAP, and administration and management. Those scores are then weighted across the four use cases outlined above.

About NuoDB

NuoDB's purpose-built SQL database combines the simplicity, rigor, and reliability of a traditional relational database with the elasticity, agility, and global accessibility provided by the cloud.

As application vendors and enterprises increasingly turn to the hybrid cloud to support their growing, global, and increasingly mobile, customer base, they rely on NuoDB as the only database that can maintain transactional consistency and integrity at global scale. These organizations trust NuoDB to meet all their needs -- active-active deployment, elastic scalability, data residency, and more -- as they run applications in the cloud.

NuoDB is headquartered in Cambridge, MA, USA, with offices in Dublin and Belfast. For more information, visit nuodb.com.
